ADVANCE -- The Rev. Jack Brown of Advance, a minister for 54 years, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1993, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was 82.
He was born Nov. 11, 1910, the son of William A. Brown. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Florenta Batten Brown Lambert and Shelby Lambert.
He was ordained as a minister in the Baptist Church in 1938 and started his ministry in the Brush Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Arab, Mo., and the Delta First Baptist Church.
His ministry was interrupted by his service in World War II. He later led congregations in Cottage Hills, Highland, Amboy, Aledo, Kane and Waverly before retiring in 1985.
He was active in numerous community organizations, including Kiwanis, a variety of youth camps and senior citizen programs. After his retirement, he moved back to Advance, where he was an active member of the First Baptist Church. He often filled in for ministers at neighboring churches when they were ill or on vacation.
He married Lela Fish on Aug. 22, 1942, at Poplar Bluff. She survives.
Also surviving are: two sons, Jack Brown Jr. of Advance and Warren Brown of Jerseyville, Ill.; two daughters, Dixie O'Brien of Livermore, Calif., and Helen Etzwiler of Bloomington, Minn.; two half-brothers, Charles Lambert of rural Advance and Roy Lambert of Florissant; two half-sisters, Hazel Dalton of Florissant and Byrel McElhinney of Kirksville; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and one grandson.
Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Advance. The Rev. Clinton Woodfin will officiate. Internment will be in Bollinger County Memorial Park in Marble Hill. Morgan Funeral Home in Advance is in charge of arrangements.
