Funeral Mass for the Rev. Canon Ellsworth B. Stone of Cape Girardeau will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Church of the Redeemer in Cairo, Ill. The Rev. Canon Arnold Hoffman and the Rt. Rev. Peter H. Beckwith will officiate. Burial will be in Winthrop Cemetery in Winthrop, Mass.
Friends may call at the church from 3-5 p.m. Sunday.
Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.
Stone, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born July 5, 1911, in Evanston, Ill., son of Bryant and Elizabeth Swanton Stone.
Stone was a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, and the General Theological Seminary. He was a chemist with Lever Brothers before entering the priesthood.
Formerly of Cairo, he was an Episcopal priest and rector many years at Church of the Redeemer in Cairo and St. Peter's Church in Mound City, Ill.
Stone was a member of Cairo Elks Lodge, American Guild of Organists, American Chemical Society, former member of Rotary Club, and had been director of communications for Alexander County and Cairo Civil Defense.
He was a major in the infantry during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in the South Pacific.
Survivors include friends Richard and Dawanda Bright of Cairo and Howard and Bonnie Kinder of Jackson, Mo.
