PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Rev. Charles J. Welter, 89, of Perryville died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Perry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 1, 1914, in LaSalle, Ill., son of August and Johanna Conley Welter.
Welter attended St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau, and received philosophy and theology degrees from St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville.
He entered novitiate at St. Mary's of the Barrens in Perryville in 1937, where he professed his vows in 1939, was ordained a deacon in 1944, and ordained a priest in 1945.
Welter served apostolate and Canonical House assignments in Dallas, Texas; LaSalle; Los Angeles; Chicago; New Orleans; Pampa and San Antonio, Texas; and Denver, Colo. He retired to DePaul Vincentian Residence in Chicago in 1989.
Survivors include two sisters, Doris Schwamberger of Arlington, Ill., and Catherine Hunter of Princeton, Ill.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Friends may call at St. Mary's of the Barrens Catholic Church from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today, and Friday after 8 a.m. The wake will be at 7:30 tonight.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. John Gagnepain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
