After serving two tours in Vietnam in the U.S. Army -- July 1968 to July 1971 -- he went back to school. He received a Master of Business Administration from Southwest Texas State at San Marcos, which included a chartered financial analyst professional designation in lieu of a doctoral degree.

He worked in his chosen field in Des Moines, Iowa, and Dallas, retiring from the Public Utility Commission of Texas in Austin.

After retiring, Ray moved to Crystal Beach, Texas, to be a beach bum. Ten years ago, he moved to Cape Girardeau to be near his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Judy Murray, and their family. Since he had no children of his own, he enjoyed his nieces and nephews and their families: Doug, Angie, Donna, Stephen, Michael, Robin, Emily, Johnathon and all of their families.

As a result of COVID-19, private burial will be held in June at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield. However, a full military honors service in Bloomfield will be announced for the public at a later date.

Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.mccombsfuneralhome.com.

Cremation was accorded by McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
