Funeral for Raymond F. Mitchell of Fairfax will be held at 10 a.m. today at Fairfax Christian Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Fairfax.

Schooler Funeral Home in Fairfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mitchell, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Community Hospital.

He was born Nov. 8, 1918, near Fairfax, son of Dennis G. and Frances Mitchell. He and Corinne Whitford were married Dec. 22, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas.

Mitchell received a bachelor of science degree in education from Tarkio College in 1940. He was a member of the NAIA national championship basketball team in 1940, and was a member of Tarkio College Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was a superintendent and coach at Nishnabotna High School; and was principal, teacher and coach at a rural Bellevue High School. He also farmed, retiring in 1987.

Mitchell was a member of Fairfax Christian Church, former member of the board and former Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of Fairfax Optimist Club, Masonic Lodge 483, and American Legion Post 284. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Stephan Mitchell of Topeka, Kan., Dr. Mark Mitchell of Aurora; a daughter, Dr. Diane McKee of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Glen Mitchell of Mexico, Mo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
