CAIRO -- Raymond H. Hughes died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was 74 years old and a long-time resident of Cairo, Ill.
He was born in Cairo on July 21, 1922, the son of Harry and Lynette Swoboda Hughes. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II. He was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Cairo V.F.W. Post 2649.
He was a career firefighter who served as the fire chief of the Cairo Fire Department. He later retired from this position.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harry L. and Norman Hughes. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Hughes of Cairo; a son, Raymond Hughes of Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, the Rev. David B. Deem officiating. Burial will follow in the Mound City National Cemetery.
