Phyllis Jean Hale, 87, passed away Friday, March 19, 2021, peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family.
Phyllis was born in February 1934 to Homer and Beulah Mae Eggleston Evans. She married Grayson Hale in 1951, and the couple moved to Chicago by 1953.
She had a long professional career, ultimately serving as director of the Users Center for Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, and also the Superconducting Super Collider project in Texas.
She is survived by her four children, Michael (Cecilia) Hale of California, Patricia Hale (Ken Mescher) of Illinois, Mark (Jennifer) Hale of Illinois and Perry (Amy) Hale of Missouri. Phyllis is also survived by her brother, Roger (Judy) Evans of Virginia, and her sister, Janice Evans Hatfield of West Virginia. She leaves five grandchildren, Matt, Gia, Sean, Kevin and Tara; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends from the world of physics and otherwise. Becky, Barb, JoAnne and Susan became especially close in recent years.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Grayson Hale, and brother-in-law, Donald R. Hatfield.
As per her wishes, there will be no funeral services.
Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of the final arrangements.
