MEADOWLAKES, Texas -- Paul S. Nussbaum, M.D., 78, passed away at his home in Meadowlakes on Dec. 13, 2008.

Paul was born Sept. 25, 1930, in St. Louis, to Dr. Paul Beckman and Claire Delphine (Stevenson) Nussbaum. He and Joyce Lee Linebarger were married May 27, 1955, in Cape Girardeau.

Paul graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tenn., in 1948, where he was a member of the swimming and diving team and a member of the championship rifle team that won the William Randolph Hearst trophy in 1948. In 1952, he graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with an bachelor's degree in biological science. Paul received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1955. He served a year of internship and a year of general surgery at St. Joseph 's Hospital in Houston, followed by a three-and-one-half-year resident program of urological training at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu.

Paul served in the military from July 1957 to December 1964. He left the service as a major in the medical corps. He returned to Cape Girardeau to practice urology with his father in 1964. Later he practiced urology for 10 years at Scott and White Clinic in Temple, Texas, and 25 years in private practice in Santa Fe, N.M. Paul was a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Urological Association. He was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, an airplane pilot, an amateur radio operator and a lieutenant colonel in the New Mexico Wing of the Civil Air Patrol. He loved flying, hunting and fishing, sailboat racing and bird watching. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Santa Fe.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Nussbaum of Meadowlakes; two sons, Paul Stevenson Nussbaum of Clearlake, Texas, and John Michael Nussbaum and wife, Deborah, of Kuwait City, Kuwait; a daughter, Barbara Lee Neary and husband, Chris, of Raton, N.M.; a sister, Judith Diane Stephens and husband, Barton, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; and six grandchildren: Jesse Michael, Lauren St. Clair, Emily Joyce, and Emma Wimberly Nussbaum and James Christopher and Tess Ellen Neary.

Paul was preceded in death by an infant son, David Matthew Nussbaum.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church at Horseshoe Bay, 600 Hi Ridge Drive, Horseshoe Bay, Texas. Private family interment with military honors will be held at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet Texas.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Putnam Funeral Home & Crematory, 145 Texas Ave., Kingsland, Texas, 78639.
