Mrs. Helen R. Howell of Cape Girardeau passed away at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997 at the age of 89.
She was born June 16, 1908 in Morehouse, MO the daughter of Benjamin & Maude nee Jones Stewart.
She married Orville Howell April 7, 1928 and he passed away Dec. 13, 1977.
Survivors include: a son Larry Howell of Carmel, Ind, one dau: Lois H. Ray of Cape Girardeau, one niece raised in her home Mrs. Joyce Zschille of Jackson and one brother Walter Stewart of Granite City, ILL.7 Grandchildren, 13-great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. She was preceded by an infant son Jackie Lee Howell, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
Mrs. Howell lived in the Morehouse community until she moved to Cape in 1928. She attended Southeast Missouri University and received her teaching degree. She taught school at Tanner, MO. After moving to Cape Girardeau she worked at the former International Shoe Factory 21 years and then she worked in food service at Southeast University for 15 years, retiring in 1979.
She did volunteer work at the Southeast Hospital, was a member of the Lynwood Baptist Church for many years, the Dorcus Sunday school class and taught Sunday school in the adult division for many years.
Mrs. Howell had resided at 1112 Perry Ave. in Cape the past 65 years but for the past week she resided at The Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997 at the Lynwood Baptist Church with Revs. Mark Anderson, S.S. Borum, Bill Ellis and Jim Osborn officiating. Burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery.
Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape from 4-8 Friday and beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lynwood Baptist Church until service time. Memorials may be given to the Lynwood Baptist Church Building Fund and to the Shepherds Home, Box 400, Union Grove, WI 53182.
