Norman H. Matthews, 84, of Jackson passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Mine La Motte, Mo., son of Oliver Dempsy and Grace Catherine Pitchford Matthews. He and Metta Mills were married March 20, 1951.
Matthews was baptized at a young age at Mine La Motte Freewill Baptist Church. When he and his wife lived in the Marquand, Mo., area they were members of Union Light Methodist Church. He worked at the shoe factory and was a small-business owner in Fredericktown, Mo. They later moved to Jackson and became members of First General Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.
He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. He earned the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, UN Service Medal and Army OCC Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Metta; a daughter, Sheila (Jack) Powell of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, O.D., Paul and Don; and two sisters, Naomi Scott and Blance Matthews.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. today at Liley Funeral Home in Patton, Mo., with the Rev. David McCutcheon officiating. Interment will be in Union Light Cemetery near Marquand.
