Norma Lou Shipp, 93, of Jackson, formerly of Cape Girardeau, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Lutheran Home.
She was born April 12, 1931, in Oriole to Roy Wilson and Laura Koeppel McLain. Norma graduated from Jackson High School on May 21, 1948.
Norma met Henry L. Shipp on a blind date. It was love at first sight. They were true soulmates. Norma and Henry were married Dec. 27, 1977, in Las Vegas. He preceded her in death May 3, 2015.
Henry’s job as an equipment superintendent for R.B. Potashnick moved them to various job sites across the United States throughout their marriage, including Clarksville, Missouri; Naples, Florida and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Retiring in 1993, Norma and Henry settled in their home on Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau.
Norma was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Egypt Mills and transferred membership to Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau in 1969. She was a member of the Supper Club and UMW. Her homemade Italian coconut crème cake was always the highest-sought dessert brought to any Grace function from dinners to fundraisers. It was not uncommon for one of Norma's cakes to bring more than $100 at many fundraising events.
Norma worked at Superior Electric as a production line technician from 1954 to 1978.
Survivors include two brothers, John (Cheral) McLain of Cape Girardeau and Jesse (Donna) McLain of Jackson; sister-in-law, Jewel McLain of O’Fallon and Dolly McLain of Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five brothers, Richard, Glenn, Roy, Fred and James McLain; and five sisters, Ruby McLain, Ruth Burchyett, Marie Hampton, Betty Melvin and Erma McDowell.
Norma will always be known for her smile. She was loved by all who knew her. Norma was kind and compassionate and was always ready to help others, even it if was just a phone call and an ear to listen. She will be truly missed by all. Norma will be especially missed by her two best caregivers, John and Evan, and her four-legged friend, Buddy.
