MALDEN, Mo. -- Norma Leona Carrel, 99, formerly of Malden, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. She was born Jan. 11, 1914, in Clarkton, Mo., to Dick and Flossie Poe McCoin. She was married on her 17th birthday, Jan. 11, 1931, to Marion Jackson Carrel, who preceded her in death Jan. 26, 1999...

MALDEN, Mo. -- Norma Leona Carrel, 99, formerly of Malden, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Jan. 11, 1914, in Clarkton, Mo., to Dick and Flossie Poe McCoin. She was married on her 17th birthday, Jan. 11, 1931, to Marion Jackson Carrel, who preceded her in death Jan. 26, 1999.

She was a resident of Malden for 66 years and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. She was very active in the church, serving as a teacher of the Willing Workers (adult) Sunday school class for a number of years and serving as a janitor of the church with her husband for a period of time.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed creating gifts for others, especially her handmade quilts. She loved the great outdoors by camping and touring state and national parks across the United States. She enjoyed fishing with her husband and sharing the stories of their adventures. She enjoyed walking and always was up for a game of dominoes or a game of cards with family and friends.

Survivors include seven children, Mildred Varvell and Juanita Cook, both of Cape Girardeau; Betty (Walter) McNeal of Wasilla, Alaska.; Billy (Betty) Carrel of Marion, Ill.; Richard (Regina) Carrel of Hewitt, Texas; Joyce Stephens of Malden; and Pat (Mike) Whitson of Wapapello, Mo. She also is survived by 17 grandchildren, Judy Wiles, David Varvell, Keith Varvell, Evan Varvell, Steve Stilson, Rhonda Clark, Kenn Weller-Stilson, Cindy Robinson, Shaun McNeal, Suzanne Lancaster, Billy D. Carrel, Jerrison Carrel, Danielle Chambless, Melanie Carrel, Heike Carrel, Trent Stephens and Kelly Tyberendt. She had 22 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a brother, Don (Frances) McCoin of Malden and four sisters, Daisy Ray of Mississippi, Ruth Stricklin of Pollock Pines, Calif., Berenice Densford of Tucson, Ariz., and Maxine (Carl) Sitta of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Vernon Carrel; two grandchildren, Tim Carrel and Eddie McNeal; a sister, Maggie Williams; and a brother, Ray McCoin.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church in Malden.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. at the church.

Landess Funeral Home in Malden is in charge of arrangements.
