Nelson Sebastian

Nelson O. Sebastian, 85, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Tilsit, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at Lutheran Home.

He was born Nov. 2, 1934, in Whitewater to Hugo and Amanda Fluegge Sebastian.

He was a longtime, faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tilsit, having been baptized and confirmed there. He was a 1952 graduate of Jackson High School.

Nelson served honorably in the U.S. Navy from March 29, 1956, to Dec. 9, 1957. The family farmed many years near Tilsit, and Nelson also worked more than 30 years as service manager at Jackson Implement Co.

Nelson and Elvira Ahrens were married June 27, 1954. Three children were born to their union: Mike (Beverly) Sebastian of Brentwood, Tennessee; Debbie (Mike) Weiss of Seguin, Texas; and Susan (David) Lowes of Jackson. He was also blessed with four grandchildren: Rachel Lowes O'Brien and husband, Brandon; Samuel Lowes; Elizabeth Weiss Green and husband, Zach; and Jarrett (Schuyler) Weiss. Also surviving are a brother, Freeman (Shirley) Sebastian of Jackson; sister, Jean (Mike) Eftink of Wappapello, Missouri; and a sister-in-law, Clara (the late Leonard) Ahrens of Tilsit.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Norman (Marie) Sebastian, Elmer (Nina) Sebastian and Walter Sebastian; sister, Esther L. (Hubert) Devenport; and sister-in-law, Luella (Roland G.) Stadt.

He is affectionately remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tilsit.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Mark Boettcher officiating. Committal service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Immanuel Lutheran Church at Tilsit.
