He was born July 13, 1958, in Perryville, Missouri, to Erwin M. and Leota S. Etzold Lorenz. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shawneetown, also the church of his marriage to Belinda "Bea" Davis, on April 28, 1984. Two sons, Jared and Spencer, were born to their union.
Nelson was a 1977 graduate of Jackson High School, and a member of FFA. He was a welder by trade, working nearly 20 years at Standley Batch, and retiring in 1996. Thereafter, he worked at Ron's Butcher Shop in Old Appleton and Beech Manufacturing in Altenburg.
