Naomi Ruth Atkinson Newman, 88, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at her home.
She was born July 29, 1935, in Clarksville, Arkansas, to Homer Herbert and Emma Anna Parsons Atkinson. She married Lois Newman on May 19, 2001, in Cape Girardeau.
She was a bookkeeper at Potashnick Construction for many years, where she retired.
Naomi was a charter member of Zonta International.
She was a longtime member of Cape First in Cape Girardeau, where she served until the end. She loved Jesus above all and her family second. She was a world-class citizen.
Survivors include a sister, Anna Jo Wagganer of Cape Girardeau; brother, J.D. Atkinson of Wood River, Illinois; and stepdaughter, Marsha (David) Hammock of Prosper, Texas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews. She always remembered their birthdays with a card and some money.
Naomi was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Clois Atkinson, Herbert "Bill" Junior Atkinson and Arlis Dean Atkinson; and three sisters, Amy Atkinson, Ila Faye Atkinson and Betty Lou McCulley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary Brothers officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Salvation Army or Teen Challenge.
