Nancy H. Bliss, 95, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Southeast Hospital.
She was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Waxahachie, Texas, daughter of the Rev. Earle Grady and Kate Aline Arnold Hamilton Sr. She and Richard Lawrence Bliss were married Oct. 1, 1948, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death Feb. 4, 2003.
Thanks to an architectural fellowship awarded to her husband, they were able to travel for nearly a year in Europe after World War II.
In 1947, she received a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Southeast Missouri State University. She taught briefly in Alton, Illinois, and one year at Brentwood High School in St. Louis County, Missouri.
She gave St. Louis architectural history talks and slide shows to the public schools and various organizations and helped with bus tours.
As a piano teacher, she gave private lessons for 28 years at her home in Kirkwood, Missouri.
She was a member of Eliot Unitarian Chapel in Kirkwood before moving to Cape Girardeau in 2002.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Marcia Bliss of Cape Girardeau; a daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Steven Mellies of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Ann Pippin of Greenville, Texas; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Andrew and Rachel Mellies; two granddaughters, Rebecca Bliss and Bailey Bliss and two great-grandsons, Zachary and Christian Mellies, all of Cape Girardeau; two stepgrandsons and stepgranddaughters-in-law and their children, Chris and Amy Patterson of Olive Branch, Mississippi, and Brad and Casey Patterson of Melbourne, Florida; and a stepgranddaughter and stepgrandson-in-law Katie and Chad Belt of St. Louis.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, E.G. Hamilton, and daughter-in-law, Joni Adams Bliss.
There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Kirkwood.
