TAMMS, Ill. -- Myrtle Modena Hawkins, 72, of East Cape Girardeau, Ill., died at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born June 19, 1930, in Alexander County, Ill., daughter of Lee Newell and Virtie Warren Newell Abercrombie.

Mrs. Hawkins was a member of the Alexander Free Will Baptist Church near Olive Branch, Ill., and was a housewife and homemaker.

On July 19, 1947, in Cairo, Ill., she married LeRoy I. Hawkins. He preceded her in death Dec. 8, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Pam and Bill Brockmire and Lisa Hawkins, all of Cape Girardeau; her mother, Virtie Newell Abercrombie of Tamms; a brother, Ralph Newell and wife Brenda of Tamms; a sister, Mary Tinsley and husband Loil "Red" Tinsley of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Carinsa Perez and husband Joseph of Jackson, Chad Brockmire and Sierra Hawkins of Cape Girardeau; two great-grandchildren, Salena and Meredith Perez of Jackson; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home in Tamms and from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander Free Will Baptist Church near Olive Branch.

Funeral will follow at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Bob Stone officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola, Ill.
