Mildred V. Schreiner, 98, of Jackson passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Luther Manor in Hannibal, Missouri. She was a former resident of the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born May 27, 1919, in Jackson to William and Lydia Bartels Lowes. She was a graduate of Jackson High School and attended Cape Girardeau Business School. She and Roger W. Schreiner were married Nov. 18, 1942, in Jackson. Two children were born to their union, Robert "Bob" and Donna.

Mildred dedicated her long life to family and building a warm, welcoming and supportive home. Roger, a career Army officer, received assignments all over the world, and the family moved with him to Japan, France, and several states in the U.S. Mildred was widowed at 58, when in 1977, Roger died suddenly from a heart attack.

Mildred was a longtime member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson, where she also worked many years as the church secretary. She sang in the church choir; sang in a trio with her sisters, Evelyn and Mabel; played the piano for her Sunday school class; and was active in the Women's Wesleyan Circle. After retiring at the age of 72, she became involved in volunteer work, including more than 500 hours at Saint Francis Medical Center and many hours assisting the Jackson Garden Club with gardening projects. She especially enjoyed flower gardening and often made beautiful bouquets to enjoy indoors.

As Mildred aged, she continued to be a wonderful role model, always remaining positive and accepting what came her way. When not feeling well, she would always say, "Maybe I will feel better tomorrow." Her children and grandchildren will remember her for her kind, generous spirit, her gift for planning and preparing wonderful meals, setting a beautiful table and for the smile on her face when they were together.
