SIKESTON -- Mildred Harper, 88, of Sells Rest Home in Matthews, died Saturday, May 28, 1994, at the rest home. She was born Jan. 2, 1906, in Sikeston, daughter of W.H. and Jennie Marshall Stubblefield. She and J. Ernest Harper were married Sept. 11, 1929. He died Sept. 22, 1978...

SIKESTON -- Mildred Harper, 88, of Sells Rest Home in Matthews, died Saturday, May 28, 1994, at the rest home.

She was born Jan. 2, 1906, in Sikeston, daughter of W.H. and Jennie Marshall Stubblefield. She and J. Ernest Harper were married Sept. 11, 1929. He died Sept. 22, 1978.

Harper attended Christian College in Columbia.

She founded Harper's Travel Service Inc. in 1957. She was active in its operation until 1988, and was president at the time of her death.

Harper was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was hostess 41 years. She was a charter member of Chapter H.B. of P.E.O., served in various offices, and was on the state board of the P.E.O. Home in St. Joseph.

She was a charter member of Rose Gate Garden Club, had served as its president, and was later assistant regional director of garden clubs in the southeastern region. She also served on the Missouri Historical Society a number of years.

Survivors include two sons, John Harper Jr. of Sikeston, William Harper of Godfrey, Ill.; a sister, Louise Groves of Sikeston, and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel until noon today.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles E. Buck officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sikeston.
