MOUNDS, Ill. -- Emmett Michael Phillips, 75, of Mounds passed away at 4:45 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

Michael was born Nov. 21, 1946, in Cairo, Illinois, son of the late Emmett Mitchell and Juanita Smothers Phillips.

He served in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he was on the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. Michael retired after 32 years from Illinois State Police as a telecommunicator. He was a lifelong member of the Cairo VFW, a former member of the Cairo Elks Lodge, and he attended Southern Grace Methodist Church in Mounds.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, James Brown, and sister, Shari Shepherd.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jackie Sue Phillips of Mounds; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Anna Phillips of Cape Girardeau; grandchildren, Quinn, Spencer, Jackson, Conrad, Henry, Frank and Sam; great-grandchild; other relatives and friends.

Friends may call between 5 and 8 p.m. today and from 8 until 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge, Illinois.

Graveside funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City, Illinois. Pastor Doug Atkins will officiate. Interment will follow. Full military honors will be given by the United States Navy Burial Team and area veterans.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Mound City National Preservation Committee in memory of Michael Phillips.
