Michael S. "Sandog" McKinnis, 67, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 18, 1950, in Cape Girardeau to William and Geneva Hartle McKinnis. He and Linda Yount married Sept. 15, 1979, at Cape Girardeau.

He served in the Army and was one of the Elite 82nd Airborne in the Special Arms Division 17th Cavalry Regiment and received the National Defense service metal and parachute badge.

He was very devoted to serving the Cape Girardeau community. He was the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks Boosters president for four years and served on the board for six years. In addition he was a Salvation Army board member and past Santa Claus and past Kiwanis Club member and was honored by the Golden Knights with an honorary baton.

He was a loyal member of LaCroix United Methodist Church. He walked by faith and loved the Lord.

He had a passion for football, baseball and Indy car racing. However, he lived his life for his family, and they were the center of his world.

Survivors include his loving wife, Linda McKinnis of Cape Girardeau; a son, Dustin McKinnis of Cape Girardeau; his mother, Geneva McKinnis of Cape Girardeau; and a sister, Patricia (Rocky) Prasse of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation was held Friday at LaCroix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family for funeral expenses.
