BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Michael Wayne Dumey, son of the late Elmer and Bertha Vetter Dumey, was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Cape Girardeau and departed this life Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at his home in Bloomfield at the age of 74 years.
Michael was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Edisto Ice Breaker and USS Valley Forge LPH-8.
He was a former educator for several Missouri school districts, serving as a former guidance counselor for Clearwater R-1, former assistant superintendent for Greenville R-II and former superintendent for Naylor R-II and Bloomfield R-XIV.
He was a former director of the Bootheel Planning Commission and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Bloomfield. He was an avid, old-school outdoorsman. He had a great love for fishing the rivers and streams of the area, and his most peaceful times were either in his canoe or kayak. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
On Aug. 12, 1972, in Chaffee, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Sarah McFerron. She survives of their home in Bloomfield.
In addition to his wife, Sarah Dumey, he is survived by two sons, Collin Dumey and fiancee, Laura Meyer, of Dexter, Missouri, and Kurt Dumey and wife, Stefanie, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; brother, John Dumey of Chaffee; two sisters, Rae Johnson of Franktown, Colorado, and Kae Harrell of Chesapeake, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Gabriel Dumey and Thomas Dumey, both of Poplar Bluff.
Other than by his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Dumey.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.
The funeral will then be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steven Koerner officiating. Interment will follow in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.
