BENTON, Mo. -- Melvin "Bud" Schweer Sr., 80, of Benton died Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 25, 1933, at Oak Ridge to Oscar and Anna Hahs Schweer. He and Mary Alice Spalding were married June 23, 1962, at St. Denis Catholic Church in Benton.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Bud drove a gas truck for Robert Oil Co. in Benton for several years. He was employed by the Scott County R-4 (Kelly) School District more than 40 years, retiring in 2009.

He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, Sikeston Eagles Lodge No. 3319 and American Legion Post 369 in Benton.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Schweer of Benton; a daughter, Mary Anna Schweer, and son-in-law, Bruce Hamm, of Benton; a son, Melvin O. Schweer Jr. of Van Buren, Ark; a sister, Marge Proffer of Whitewater; two grandchildren, Grant A. Schweer of Van Buren and Lexie E. Schweer of Fort Smith, Ark.; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden A. Schweer and Avery E. Threatt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Anna Lee Quade and Wanda Brown.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Benton. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Denis Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Casteel officiating.

Burial will be at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Denis Catholic Church, 135 N. Winchester St., Benton, MO 63736 or St. Denis Catholic School, 105 N. Winchester St.
