SCOTT CITY -- Melvin Cook Sr., 84, died Friday, May 16, 1997, in Scott City after being struck by an automobile.
He was born July 4, 1912, at Brownwood, son of Eugene and Mary Ann Fife Cook. He and Clara Marie Wylder were married April 2, 1932, at Benton. She died Feb. 15, 1986.
Cook was a brakeman with Southern Pacific Railroad 35 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of United Transportation Union Local 512.
Survivors include five sons, Norman Cook of Hornbeak, Tenn., Melvin and Allen Cook of Scott City, Freddie Cook of Jefferson City, Eddie Cook of Blythe, Calif.; two daughters, Laura Frances Stone of Pine Bluff, Ark., Carolyn Brown of Scott City; a brother, Burette Cook of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Oma Stone of Peoria, Ill., Dora Statt of St. Louis; 29 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, a brother, a sister, and a grandchild.
Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City after 5 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at the chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday, with Dr. Ronald E. Stone, grandson of Cook, officiating. Burial will be in Lightner Cemetery.
