Matthew Allen Ward, 36, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at his mother's home in Cape Girardeau, surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 19, 1984, in Cape Girardeau to Robert Keith Allen and Karen Nickels Ward.

Matt and Valerie Lawless were married in 2010. He was a member of Fruitland Community Church.

He was a 2003 graduate of Advance (Missouri) High School and graduated with a master's degree in occupational therapy from Saint Louis University. Matt served five and one-half years in the U.S. Navy.

Matt was an occupational therapist with the Visiting Nurse Association for the last six years.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and loved watching, teaching and playing baseball with his son, Mason. Matt also loved taking walks, riding bikes, camping and playing in the park with his daughter, Daphne.

Loving survivors include his mother, Karen Ward; wife, Valerie Ward; son, Mason; daughter, Daphne; sisters, Christa (Billy) Anderson of Jackson and Jeanie Ward-Epley of Arkansas; aunt, Barb (Chris) Ford of St. Louis; uncle, Steve (Denise) Ward of Cape Girardeau; uncle, John Nickels of St. Louis; uncle, David Nickels of Cape Girardeau; and many beloved cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Keith Allen Ward.

A celebration of life service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Fruitland Community Church with the Rev. Mike Parry officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial with full military honors will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to VNA Hospice, 2311 Bloomfield Road, Suite 103, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701 or Cardinals Care, 700 Clark St., St. Louis, MO 63102.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
