Mary Newell

CAIRO, Ill. -- Mary Catherine Newell, 97, of Cairo died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Day Star Nursing Home in Cairo.

She was born March 2, 1916, in Cairo, daughter of Edward Dyas and Wilhelminia Alice Wallbaum of Cairo. On July 24, 1943, at St. Mary's Church in Mound City, Ill., she married Fred Newell. He preceded her in death Jan. 1, 1992.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Julie Jones Newell; and granddaughter, Christie Ann Newell of Cairo.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Newell of Cairo and Stephen Newell and wife Linda of Terrell, Texas; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Newell and Angela Newell of Terrell; Jeffrey's wife Rachel; and a soon to arrive great-grandson.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Cairo and member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Home in Cairo. The rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Church, with the Rev. Chris Mujule officiating. Interment will be in Mound City National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
