EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ill. -- Mary C. Abercrombie, 66, of East Cape Girardeau, died Monday, Jan. 31, 1994, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
She was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Alexander County, daughter of John L. and Lena Mainer Colyer. She and John L. Abercrombie were married Aug. 2, 1946.
Abercrombie graduated from McClure High School, attended Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1964.
She began her teaching career in 1945 at Pence School in Thebes. She taught in Shawnee School District 84 from 1949 until retiring in June 1986. She continued as Chapter I director with the district until becoming ill.
Abercrombie served as a trustee of the village board here, was a member and pianist at Baptist Bible Church in McClure, was an active volunteer with American Red Cross blood drives, and was active in numerous community projects. She was a member of Illinois Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Livesay of Lynchburg, Va., Lana Loftis of Cape Girardeau; a son, Alan Abercrombie of Royalton; a brother, Clyde Colyer of Thebes; four sisters, Jeannie Hale and Reva Kaufman of Pekin, Joann Toler of McClure, Lena Hill of Kirkwood, Mo., and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Chapel in Cape Girardeau. The Revs. Cliff Burchyett, F.M. Speakman and Raymond Oxford will officiate, with burial in Lindsey Cemetery near McClure.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-9 p.m. today.
