Mark Hughes

OLMSTED, Ill. -- Mark Lafayette Hughes, 72, of Anderson, S.C., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at Hospice House in Anderson.

He was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Olmsted, son of Marcus L. and Ruth Hodgendobler Hughes Jr. He married Phyllis Jean Hudgens.

Mark's career started in 1955 as a relief pitcher for the Washington Senators farm club. After baseball in 1965, he went to work for Morton Salt and later for McCormick Spice in 1975. He retired from CF Sauer Co. in Greenville, S.C., where he was a PC expert having pioneered the art of portion packing for companies all over the United States. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Anderson.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jean; two daughters, Margo (Joe) Cservek of Ellicott City, Md., Dara (Bruce) Miller of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a son, Randall (Mary Ann) Hughes of Perry Hall, Md.

Also two sisters, Donna Rose of Olmsted, Margaret Stillwell of Mahomet, Ill.; two brothers, Clayton and Dale Hughes of Chicago; seven grandchildren, Houston, Harrison, Timothy, Matthew, Taylor, Kaitlyn and Connor.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Olmsted United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Steve Heisner and Pete Ryan officiating.

Sullivan-King Mortuary in Anderson was in charge of arrangements in Anderson.
