Graveside service for Marilyn Ballow Briney of Tuscaloosa, Ala., will be held at 4 p.m. today at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa.
Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Tuscaloosa is in charge of arrangements.
Marilyn, 66, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000. She was a devoted wife and mother and nurtured many lifelong friendships.
She was born June 24, 1934, in Livingston, Ala., daughter of Billye Smith Ballow McElroy and the late John T. Ballow. Her mother resides in Huntsville, Ala.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, James Rolf Briney III. Dr. Briney was a member of the faculty of Southeast Missouri State University, as both associate professor and department chairperson in the computer science department.
Marilyn and Jim lived and raised their family in Cape Girardeau from 1968 through the mid-1980s, and have kept in touch with the special friends they made there, even after retiring to the South.
She leaves behind four children who loved her dearly: Cynthia Briney Knaus, her daughter, and William A. Knaus, her son-in-law, of Upper Montclair, N.J.; Jeffrey Ballow Briney, her son, and Julie Hope Briney, her daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren, Ben, Brighid and Elizabeth of Lake St. Louis, Mo. Marilou Briney Baker, her daughter, and Oliver Charles Baker III, her son-in-law, of Tuscaloosa, who are expecting their first child in December. John Paul Briney, her son, and Meyvi Briney, her daughter-in-law, and grandson James Rolfe Briney IV of Mobile, Ala. She is also survived by a sister, Sylvia Ballow Gullatt, and brother-in-law, Ed Gullatt of Huntsville. She leaves behind her niece Carol; her nephews Greg, Ken and Bill, and their families.
In 1997 Marilyn received a gift of life from a generous organ donor. After her lung transplant she was able to spend more precious time with her friends and family. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the HTICU Medical Team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital for their special efforts and considerate care for her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association. Marilyn also supported the Tuscaloosa Town People for Animal Welfare and Safety (T-Town PAWS Inc.), P.O. Box 861403, Tuscaloosa, Ala., 35486-0012. Donations to this cause in her name would be greatly appreciated.
