Retired Air Force Maj. Scott Layton Mayfield of Newport News, Va., went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 14, 2007, at the Virginia Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton, Va.
He was born April 17, 1966, in Cape Girardeau. He had been a Virginia Peninsula resident the past five years.
Maj. Mayfield retired in 2004 from Langley Air Force Base after more than 15 years of honorable service to his country, where he served as a navigator on the B-52 bomber.
A devoted husband and faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church, he always had a passion for mission work and helping others, and was never bitter toward God about his illness.
He was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and a member of the NRA.
Earning his small arms expert certification while in the Air Force, he loved competitive pistol shooting with the USPSA-IPSC.
Mr. Mayfield is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Stacey E. Mayfield of Newport News; his parents, Layton W. and Margaret Mclane Mayfield of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Becky Shell and husband Bill, and their two children, Emma and Bill, also of Cape Girardeau.
A memorial service celebrating Scott's life will be held at 11 a.m. today at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Joe Hunt officiating.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lightner Memorial Cemetery in Scott City. The Rev. Garry Zook will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Liberty Baptist Church, Missions Fund, 1021 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Va., 23666.
Out-of-town arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City is in charge of local arrangements.
