JACKSON, Mo. -- Lyman Stevens, 78, of Jackson died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Cape Girardeau, son of Lyman and Clara Schrader Stevens Sr. He and Maxine Morton were married April 14, 1946.

Stevens was a 1943 graduate of Jackson High School. He was a registered architect in Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois, and a member of AIA.

He lived in Sikeston eight years, was a former member and president of the Kiwanis Club, and was named Man of the Year in 1959. He lived in Jefferson City, Mo., a few years, moving to Paducah, Ky., in 1966 where he worked at Peck and Associates and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Stevens retired in 1988, returned to Jackson in 2001 and became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a longtime member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158.

He was a paratrooper with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, serving throughout Central Europe.

Survivors include his wife.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and two brothers.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4 to 8 p.m. today. An American Legion service will be held at 7.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery, with a Missouri Military Honors service.
