Lygia D. Temple Whitelaw, 78, of Joliet, Ill., died Saturday, August 28, 1999, at Salem Village Nursing and Rehab Center in Joliet.

She was born Oct. 22, 1920, in St. Louis, daughter of William and Pauline Slaughter Temple. She married Donald Whitelaw, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Whitelaw was a graduate of John S. Cobb School. She lived in Cape Girardeau many years and had been a housekeeper for Dr. and Mrs. Frank Hall and other families.

She later moved to Hammond, Ind., and retired as a custodian at Hammond Schools. She had lived in Joliet with her niece, Laura Jean (Williams) Cato until November 1996 when she became a resident of Salem Village.

She is survived by a sister, Thelma Fielder of Hammond, Ind., also nieces, Laura Jean (Williams) Cato of Willow Springs, Mo.; Geneva (Carter) James of Westboro, Ma.; Elsie Marie Williams of Cape Girardeau; Gladys (Williams) Young of Memphis, Tenn.; Mary Margaret (Williams) Lacy of Cape Girardeau, nephews, Lloyd Williams, Jr. of Cape Girardeau, Paul Williams of Ellenwood, Ga.; Joseph Williams of Kansas City, Mo.; 15 great nieces and nephews; 8 great, great nieces and nephews, god daughter, Anna Hudson of Cleveland, Oh.; and very dear friend, Mrs. Rebecca Cheatham of Hammond, Ind. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Elsie Sterling and Anna Mae Williams.

Pallbearers for the service will be Craig Williams, Elliott Young, Galen Young, Joseph Williams, Lloyd Williams and Leslie Young. Honorary Pallbearers will be David L. Cato, Howard Cheatham, Theodis Fielder and Edwin James.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel, 829 N. West End Blvd. with Rev. Howard McGee officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
