THEBES, Ill. -- Lucy Elzora Bedwell, 90, of Twente Crossing Road, Thebes, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Lucy was a proud and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
She was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Sandusky, Ill. She was the daughter of the late Charley and Mae Poe Griggs.
She had several interesting careers during her life. She worked at Lowebaun Manufacturing Co. in Mounds for 17 years. She was an excellent seamstress. Upon the death of her husband, she was employed as a cook by Mid-South Towing for 15 years before retiring at the age of 65. She traveled up and down the Mississippi River from Cairo to New Orleans. She loved to travel and took many vacations with her adult kids.
She was an active member of Alexander Freewill Baptist Church. She recently enjoyed her 90th birthday with an open house celebration.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phebe W. Bedwell, in 1970. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Griggs Jr.; two sisters, Elsie Strader and Jessie Heindricks; and a son-in-law, Bob Young.
Survivors include a daughter, Lovye Young of Evansville, Ind.; a son, Phebe Bedwell and his wife Vivian of Magnolia, Ark.; a son, Wilbur Bedwell and his wife Sandy of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Jessie Turner and husband Dennis of Thebes; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Friends may call between noon and service time today at Jones Funeral Home in Tamms, Ill.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Pastor Earnest Brown officiating.
Interment will follow in the Twente Cemetery in rural Thebes.
