THEBES, Ill. -- Louis Lloyd Schlamer, 94, of Thebes died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Daystar Care Center in Cairo, Ill.
He was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Cache, Ill., to Emile and Jennie Hewitt Schlamer. He and Thelma Pauline Foster were married May 26, 1943, at Charleston, Mo., making it a union of 68 years.
Louis served in the Army during World War II. He was a staff sergeant with Company A, 381st Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division "Deadeyes." He participated in the division landing on Leyte in the Philippines on Oct. 20, 1944. He was also in the first wave when the 96th Division landed on Okinawa on April 1, 1945. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Expert Infantry Badge and two Overseas Service Bars.
Following his discharge he was employed by Florsheim Shoe Co. until retirement. He was a member of American Legion Post 158 in Jackson, Thebes Grade School Board and Thebes Town Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and going on nature walks with family members. He was an avid Cardinals fan.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline of Thebes; a son, Louis Ray "Bud" Schlamer of Thebes; two daughters, Linda Kay (Charles) Hutson of Jackson, Vickie Sue (Zachary) Hannan of Mounds, Ill.; three grandchildren, Christopher Louis (Lindsey) Hutson of Cape Girardeau, Craig Robert Hutson of St. Louis, Zachary Ryan (Ashley) Hannan of Anna, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Jack and Kate Hutson of Cape Girardeau, Nicholas and Tyler Hannan of Anna; a sister, Emma Hinton of Cairo; a brother, Samuel "Dick" (Evelyn) Schlamer of Thebes; and a sister-in-law, LaVern Schlamer of Cape Girardeau.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eula Vaughn; four brothers, Joseph, Gerald, Emile and Carl Schlamer; and an infant brother.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time Saturday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tommy Weems officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thebes.
