Loren N. Slinkard, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Chateau Girardeau.
He was born Jan. 4, 1927, in Marble Hill, Missouri, to Marion J. and Blanche V. (Pair) Slinkard. He married Mary N. Lewis on Oct. 10, 1958. She preceded him in death June 22, 2014.
Loren was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years. He was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University.
After retiring Oct. 13, 1982, Loren and Mary traveled the world for the next 20 years, visiting nearly every country in the world. They were fond of cruising and were on 61 ships, sailing the oceans and seas. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean 37 times and the Pacific 23 times. They also traveled to the Arctic and had four landings in Antarctica. They made six trips around the world and went on nine safaris (seven in Africa and two in India). They had been to all 50 States and all Canadian provinces.
Loren is survived by his daughter, Sharon Cortelyou (Carol Seithel) of St. Louis; a grandson, Gary (Melinda) Pope of Flint, Michigan; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife; all of his siblings; and a daughter, Diane L. Pope.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service for Loren N. Slinkard will be at noon Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Stan Hargis officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield.
