LTC Lloyd Wesley Young, 74, USA Retired, of Scott City, Mo., entered into heavenly rest Friday, July 20, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Never complaining through a long and bravely fought battle with cancer, he was surrounded by his loving family and friends at the time of his passing. He had been a resident of the Lutheran Home since June 1, 2007, and was grateful for the loving care he received.

LTC Young was born April 28, 1933, in Fornfelt, Mo., son of Charley Herman and Norma Ann Chaffin Young. He was a graduate of Illmo-Fornfelt High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University. He then received a bachelor's degree from Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. He was a graduate of 20 Army schools including Command and General Staff College. His many honors and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.

Lloyd married his soul mate, Shirley Ann Sample, on Oct. 7, 1956, at Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau and gave thanks to the Lord that they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 7, 2006.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Richard Lloyd Young (Tami) of Casper, Wyo., Devon Wesley Young (Ann) of St. Louis; three grandchildren, David Andrew Young (Hailey) of Casper, Cameron Wesley Young and Anastasia Marie Young of St. Louis.; two great-grandchildren, Madison Lynn Young and Marcus Lloyd Young of Casper; a sister-in-law, Ruth Young of Scott City, Mo., and many nephews and nieces.

LTC Young was an Army Aviator rated in helicopters and fixed wing aircraft and often referred to flying as "hours and hours of boredom interrupted by moments of stark terror." He was attached to the 140th Infantry Regiment, 35th Aviation Company, 1st Battle Group 140th Infantry, and 135th Engineer Group. During his career, Lloyd held many positions, retiring as Group Executive Officer. His duties took him to many states, Europe, Asia and Central America. He retired on April 30, 1988.

Lloyd was a member of Eisleben Lutheran Church in Scott City where he served two terms as elder and taught Bible classes. Other memberships include American Legion Post 63 where he served as 1st Vice Commander, National Rifle Association and Retired Army Association. After retiring, he attended and graduated from the Police Academy at Southeast Missouri State University and served his city as chief of the Police Reserve. He also worked as a private investigator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles H. Young Jr., sister Opal Mae Riggs, niece Patty Kiehelhorst and his mother and father-in-law, William and Reva Sample.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City during which Louis K Juden American Legion Post 63 will render honors at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held prior to the funeral from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at Eisleben Lutheran Church in Scott City followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Azinger and the Rev. Paul Short officiating. Full military honors will be provided by U.S. Army Headquarters, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Reserved seating for those who served with LTC Young will be held until 10:40 a.m.

Civilian pallbearers will be nephews Arthur Druckenmiller, Ronald Kohler, John Stanard, Reginald Swan, N.R. Swan Jr. and Fred Vincel. Honorary pallbearers are his special neighbor Alvie Baker, special army partner Richard Sullivan, special helper Bill Blaylock and military breakfast buddies Clem Crain, John Dragoni and Jerry Stauber.

Memorials may be made to Eisleben Lutheran Church, Lloyd Young Memorial Fund.
