MATTHEWS -- Leta S. Settles, 85, of Matthews died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born March 22, 1912, in New Madrid County, daughter of William Gardner and Maudie Beck Hastings. She and Joseph Samuel Settles were married Dec. 25, 1930, in New Madrid County. He died April 28, 1972.
Settles had been a salesclerk at Helen's Florist, Britt's Department Store, and Jenkins Shoe Store. She was a member of Little Vine General Baptist Church and its Ladies Aid, and member of New Madrid County Extension Club.
Survivors include two sons, William Settles of Dexter, Gerald Settles of Sikeston; three daughters, Joan Nall of Sikeston, Barbara Jones of Atlanta, Ga., Cathy Settles of Matthews; a brother, Donald Hastings of Sikeston; five sisters, Dorothy Alley, Lucille Pruitt, Lizzie Campbell and Modena Hastings, all of Sikeston, Ozeal Jones of Anderson, Ind.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, with Dr. Jim Guffie and the Rev. Kelley Grubbs officiating. Burial will be in Dogwood Cemetery.
