MALDEN - Leslie "Les" Gus Heise, 82, of Malden, formerly of Cape Girardeau, died unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 6, 1992 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 8, 1909 to the late Gus and Anna Abernathy Heise. He was an employee of Standard Oil Co. and owned and operated his own distributorship in Malden.

On Sept. 6, 1936 he married Virginia Louise Hoy of Malden, who survives.

A veteran of World War II, Heise was a recognized advocate of community service projects, having been recognized twice as Malden Citizen of the Year. Heise also was recognized as the 1982 Lions Club Citizen of the Year and as the 1991 Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Volunteer of the Year.

He founded the Malden Community center, of which he served as chairman. He also was a member and chairman of the Trustees of the Malden United Methodist Church, a member of the Malden Rotary Club, and a member and president of the Malden and Dunklin County school boards.

He served as a member of the Governor's Council on Education and as the first president of the Malden Community Concert Association.

Other survivors include daughters Nancy Pope of Camdenton and Linda Filcox of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a son, Hoy Heise of Brooksfield, Conn.; and brothers Gale, Dale and Harry Heise, all of Cape Girardeau.

Surviving also are sisters Mildred Haupt of Cape Girardeau; Lillian Condiff of Tampa, Fla.; Grace Hobbs of Springfield; Nelda Hobbs of Hot Springs, Ark.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Malden. The Rev. John Batchelor will officiate.

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

Landess Funeral Home of Malden is in charge of arrangements.
