Lelan LaVerne Ates, 67, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at his home.
He was born Dec. 16, 1932, in Cape Girardeau, son of John P. and Anna Engelmann Ates. He and Mary Jane Thornton were married Feb. 4, 1961, in Cape Girardeau.
Ates was a farmer in the Egypt Mills community. He was a member of Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 18, 1954, to Oct. 18, 1956. He was a member of the 80th Heavy Tank Battalion and was stationed in Hawaii. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Expert Marksmanship Award.
Survivors include his wife; four sisters, Verna Tidwell and Eula Jones of Cape Girardeau, Elsie Surina of Desloge, and Alene Hale of Zalma.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with Michael Davis and Lloyd Engelmann officiating. Burial will be in Hobbs Chapel Cemetery.
