CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Funeral service for Lawrence J. (Shorty) Whelan, 555 N. Spring, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel. The Rev. Cecil Barham will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 tonight.

A service will also be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo, Ill. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

Friends may call at the Waterloo funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Whelan, 71 years old, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1991, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Maeystown, Ill., son of Edward T. and Anna Heck Whelan. He and the former Betty Haney were married Feb. 25, 1950, in Waterloo.

Whelan was a retired truck driver with Tower Rock Stone Co. at Ste. Genevieve. He attended Bethel Assembly of God Church, and was a member of VFW Post 3838. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Whelan of Cape; a daughter, Brenda Lufcy of Cape; two brothers, John and William Whelan of Waterloo, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers.
