THEBES, Ill. -- Kevin Gene Dougherty, 50, of Thebes died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at home with his family by his side, following a four-year battle with cancer.
He was born April 27, 1962, in Springfield, Ill., son of Charles E. and Honey Lou Hantz Dougherty. He and Tamra "Tammy" Monahan were married Nov. 1, 1999.
After graduation from Reed Custer High School, Kevin enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served four years.
Kevin was a member of Apostolic Lighthouse Church in Thebes. He loved to hunt, fish, spend time with his children and the many special dances with Marlee. He was a corrections officer at Tamms Correctional Center.
Survivors include his loving wife, Tamra "Tammy" Dougherty of Thebes; seven children, Dustin and wife Stormy of Thebes, Keri at home, Frank of Rushville, Ill., Brenda of Syracuse, N.Y., Lyn and husband Daniel of Norfolk, Va., Miranda of Macomb, Ill., and Marvalee at home; three grandchildren, Camryn, Jimmie and Shane; his mother, Honey Dougherty of Wilmington, Ill.; a brother, William Dougherty of Ardmore, Okla.; three sisters, Glenda (Russ) Marshall of Verona, Va., Brenda Garrett of Bloomington, Ill., and Julie (Frank) Palmateer of Kankakee, Ill.; wife's parents, Jimmie and Marvalee Monahan of Thebes; a brother-in-law, Jon (Jeanie) Monahan of Thebes; dear friends, Neil and Helen Kefauver of Cape Girardeau; and a special friend, Aunt Sissy; nieces, nephews and other relatives; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, and from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at Apostolic Lighthouse Church.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Jimmie Monahan and Dustin Easton officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by members of the U.S. National Guard and area veterans. He will be laid to rest in the Monahan family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery in Thebes.
Memorial contributions may be made for Marlee's care and will be accepted at the funeral home and the church.
