Joyce Bernice Schmitz, 81, of Jackson passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born May 30, 1940, to Lester Charles and Stella Park Burger in Cape Girardeau. She and Richard L. Schmitz were married July 26, 1958, in Collinsville, Illinois, and they had three children.

Joyce was a former member of LaCroix United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. In Joyce's earlier years, she enjoyed square dancing and was an avid Girl Scout leader. Later in life, she loved coloring and sharing her coloring with her family.

She is survived by three children, April (Tom) Rhodes of Jackson, Annette Horman of Columbia, Missouri, and Chad (Heather) Schmitz of Chesterfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Lindsey (Matt) Hale and Jennifer (Chris) McQuay, both of Jackson; Kyle Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau; James Horman of State College, Pennsylvania; and William Horman of Columbia; a brother, Marvin Burger of Zalma, Missouri; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, Betty Kinder, Max Burger, Lester Burger Jr., Samelia Burger and Gerald Burger.

A memorial visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Kim Holman officiating. Inurnment will follow in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.
