CHARLESTON -- Joseph Willis Layton Sr., 62, of Charleston died Saturday, Nov. 4, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born April 19, 1933, at Charleston, son of Carl and Grace McCracken Layton. He and Patricia Howlett were married Dec. 3, 1949.

Layton was a self-employed businessman who retired in 1988. He served on the Charleston City Council and was mayor in 1969 and 1970. He also was a member of the Charleston Lion's Club, the Charleston Community Choir and the First Baptist Church in Charleston. He served two years in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his mother and his wife, both of Charleston; two sons, Joseph Willis Layton Jr. of Louisville, Ky., and Jon D. Layton of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, where funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Gerald Collier will officiate, and burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
