Joseph Charles Wengert, 86, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born July 24, 1915, at St. Mary, Mo., son of Martin and Josephine Breig Wengert. He and Venita McAtee were married Aug. 16, 1941, at Perryville., Mo.

Joseph moved to Cape Girardeau in 1941 from Perryville. He worked at Rueseler Chevrolet 10 years, and was office manager at Auto Tire and Parts 35 years.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, American Legion, Kiwanis Club, and Knights of Columbus Council 1111. He was a past president of the Kiwanis Club.

Joseph served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 1, 1943 to Dec. 20, 1945.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry Wengert of Joliet, Ill., Danny Wengert of Vista, Calif., Kevin Wengert of Cape Girardeau; three daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah and Greg Crawford of Cape Girardeau, Sharon Cassout of Cape Girardeau, Jo Ann Hunze of Chesterfield, Mo.; a brother, Herbert Wengert of St. Mary; a sister, Edna Donze of St. Mary; and five grandchildren, Joe Hunze, Jonathan Hunze, Dana Crawford, Kara Crawford and Brandon Crawford; and a great-grandchild, Ashley Kimbel.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Sunday. Parish prayers will be at 7, followed by the Knights of Columbus rosary.

Funeral Mass will be at noon Monday at St. Vincent's Church. The Rev. Dan Schulte will officiate. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be Joe Hunze, Jonathan Hunze, Greg Crawford, Ivan Brewer, Jim Tlapek and Jim Hunze.
