Joseph Martin Carter, 97, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center. He was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Doniphan, Mo., son of Alvin L. and Edith Pearl Martin Carter. He and Elizabeth Estes were married June 12, 1933, in Hollister, Mo. She died Dec. 20, 1992...

Joseph Martin Carter, 97, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Doniphan, Mo., son of Alvin L. and Edith Pearl Martin Carter. He and Elizabeth Estes were married June 12, 1933, in Hollister, Mo. She died Dec. 20, 1992.

Carter spent 55 years as a sales representative with Equitable Life. He owned and operated Carter's Walgreen Drug Store. He was a member of Downtown Rotary Club, active with Chateau Girardeau Foundation, and member of First Presbyterian Church and served on the Global Missions Committee.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. James Carter of Ridgewood, N.J.; a sister, Betty Thompson of Higginsville, Mo.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son and a brother.

Burial will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 10 in Cape County Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time Nov. 10 at First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the church, with the Revs. Paul Kabo Jr. and James Carter officiating.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
