John D. Statler, 82, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, at Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau.
He was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Sedgewickville, Missouri, to Joseph Aaron and Carrie E. James Statler. He and Dorothy Young were married Nov. 25, 1954, at First Methodist Church in Chaffee, Missouri.
John was a graduate of Chaffee High School. He was a grocery buyer for SuperValu in Scott City.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist in Cape Girardeau and Chaffee Lodge 615 AF&AM, where he was a member over 50 years, held many offices and was Past Master.
His hobbies included gardening and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Statler of Cape Girardeau; son, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Statler of Jackson; daughter, Tamara (Tony) Smee of Cape Girardeau; sister, Juanita (Boyd) Summers of Jackson; grandchildren, Winnie and Hayden Smee of Cape Girardeau, Nikki (Zachary) Gowin of Olive Branch, Illinois, and Anson Dykes of Paducah, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Gracie and Gibson Gowin of Olive Branch; numerous nieces and nephews; close friends, Hank and Eva Golightly of Chaffee; and sister-in-law, Betty (Freeman) Hudgins of Marion, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Helen Statler and Jacob and Freeda Statler; brother, Judith Statler; and sister, Edith Statler.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. A Masonic service will be at 7:30 p.m.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Tom Sullenger officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.
