John Wesley Smoot, 72, of Allen, Texas, formerly of Scott County, Mo., departed this life Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Alexandria Assisted Living in Frisco, Texas.

He was born July 24, 1940, in Scooba, Miss., to Walter and Willie Bell Carter Smoot. He was the third-eldest born to this union. During his young age the Smoot family relocated to Missouri. He left Missouri and traveled to Niles, Mich., in pursuit of a career opportunity that landed him in East Chicago, Ind., where he remained until retirement.

John leaves to cherish his memory his children, Allen of Milwaukee, Danny of South Bend, Ind., Ronetra "Kissy" of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Erica of South Bend; seven brothers, Mack Smoot of Norfolk, Neb., Willie C. Smoot (Ida) of Niles, George Smoot (Ollie) of Marion, Ind., James G. Smoot (Carol) of Huntsville, Ala., Jesse Lee Smoot of Sikeston, Mo., Charles Smoot of Cape Girardeau and Hubert Smoot (Faye) of Cape Girardeau; four sisters, Hattie Pearl Manuel (Ben) of Decatur, Ga., Ella Segers-Backus (David) of Oran, Mo., Carolyn Smoot of Sikeston and Jean Green (James) of Lucas, Texas; others, Linda Williams of Haywood City, Mo., Laura and Sally Sheron of Sikeston; uncles, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his eldest brother, Walter Smoot Jr.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. James Green officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
