POPLAR BLUFF -- John W. Sides, 73, of Poplar Bluff died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, at his home.
He was born on Nov. 3, 1924, at Belleville, Ark., son of Grover C. and Effie Lee Payne Sides. He and Marie Pixley were married in Piggott, Ark., on June 3, 1945.
Sides moved from Arkansas to Dexter in 1942 where he lived until 1962. He then moved to Conway, Ark., where he worked for the Conway Corporation Utility Co. as a water filter maintenance worker. He moved to Poplar Bluff 12 years ago.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the VFW. He served as a volunteer at the VA Hospital in Poplar Bluff for nine years, putting in more than 5,000 hours.
He was a member of the First Church of God in Poplar Bluff.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Dale Sides and John Wesley Sides Jr., both of Conway; three daughters, Rose Chitwood, Barbara Cowin and Thelma Gibson, all of Poplar Bluff; a brother, Jack Sides of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Sue Joseph of Dexter and Mozel Wilcox of Conway; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Friends may call at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Richard Triplett will officiate, with burial in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter.
