John F. Schwartz, 74, of Cape Girardeau passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, at Southeast Hospital.

He was born Feb. 11, 1944, in Cape Girardeau to the late John and Johanna Backfish Schwartz. John and Neisha A. Castleman were married in June 1964. She survives.

John was a graduate of Scott City High School. He worked as a jailer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department and was a lifelong farmer. John was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6420. John's last act of kindness was being able to help others as an organ donor.

Loving survivors include his wife of 54 years, Neisha, of Cape Girardeau; daughters, Jill Essner of Jackson and Dana (David) Vandeven of Marble Hill, Missouri; sons, Matthew (Lorrie) Schwartz of Cape Girardeau and Philip (Tonya) Schwartz of Perryville, Missouri; sister, Shirley (Ed) Beel of Cape Girardeau; nine grandchildren, Emily (Curtis) Hall, Stephanie (Aaron) Horrell and Eric Essner, Victor (Ashley) Vandevan, Trent (Kristen) Vandeven, Mary, Anna, John and William Schwartz.; and three great-grandchildren, Willow, Easton, Bailey, with one on the way.

Memorial visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a later date at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
