John Richard Reed, 85, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2020, at the Lutheran Home.
He was born Oct. 24, 1935, in Dongola, Missouri, to Charles Glenn and Ellade Adeline Ervin Reed.
He and Shirley Merritt were married Dec. 19, 1954, at Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death Sept. 17, 2017.
John owned and operated Reed's Zephyr Service Station.
He was an avid fisherman.
He was a member of First General Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.
Survivors include three sons, Rick Reed and Robert (Regina) Reed, both of Cape Girardeau, and Ronald (Terri Fisher-Reed) Reed of Ballwin, Missouri; brother, Charles "Bub" Reed of Buchanan, Tennessee; four sisters, Thelma Brothers of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; Dorothy (Joe) O'Neal of Greenville, Florida; Shirley (David) Vandiver of Barnhart. Missouri; and Doris (Jim) Cotner of St. Charles, Missouri; three grandchildren, Rachel (Todd Brooks) Reed, Roma (David) Scroggins and Jude Reed; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sisters, Jean Ellen McKnight and Lucille O'Howell; and a grandson, Richard Reed II.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, both visitation and funeral service will be private, with the Rev. Sam Ramdial officiating. Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
